The hot weather is here and so is the 24th Annual FREE Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival in Clarksdale. The Festival will host a wide assortment of acts as  will the many venues around town. CLICK HERE to read more about the festival.

We suggest you also visit Roger Stolle’s classic “Live Music In The Delta” page which boats EVERYTHING going on in and around Clarksdale and Coahoma County and beyond.

Two Mississippi Delta boys were in town and spent some time with The Delta Bohemian. Desaix Anderson (now living between New York and Paris) and his brother, Buford, (now living in Tampico, Mexico) were in town to check on the progress of their new venture in Magical Madge’s former hometown of Sumner, Mississippi. Buford and Desaix purchased the old Marley Farms building from Madge and her brothers several years ago. It is situated on the square next to the courthouse in Sumner. The building is currently undergoing a massive renovation for their new Cassidy Bayou Art Gallery. The Delta Bohemian will be posting some exciting information about their project prior to their grand opening on October 1. Stay tuned.

Poor William and Magical Madge ventured out of Coahoma County this past week and visited the wonderful Delta town of Greenwood. They enjoyed The Alluvian Bar and the sounds of Cecil Abels, Duff Dorrough and Scott Albert Johnson. They later dined in a private, two person booth at Lusco’s and enjoyed every single bite, especially the luscious pompano.

Another night at Rust Restaurant in Clarksdale proved to be fun, as always.

Maude Schuyler Clay and her husband, Langdon, ventured to New Orleans  for the opening of the Ogden Museum’s Mississippi Photographs, 1860s-Present. Maude is one of the featured photographers in the exhibit. The exhibition includes photographs by George Ballis, Lyle Bongé, Seth Boonchai, Jane Rule Burdine, Maude Schuyler Clay, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, William Ferris, Roland Freeman, Matt Herron, Lewis Hine, Birney Imes, Jessica Ingram, William Henry Jackson, Franke Keating, Stuart Klipper, Jack Kotz, Clarence John Laughlin, Danny Lyon, Milly Moorehead West, David Rae Morris, Tom Rankin, Kathleen Robbins, Euphus Ruth, Jack Spencer, Mark Steinmetz, S. Gayle Stevens, Eudora Welty, Bruce West, Marion Post Wolcott and Terry Wood. The exhibition will be on view through September 18, 2011.

Enjoy the Video of musicians Dr. Alphonso Sanders and Marshall Drew.

And, don’t forget, the entire State of Mississippi is eagerly anticipating the opening of The Help today! Check out this Fantastic Trailer!

  1. Louis and I have fallen in love with Clarksdale! The people are super friendly, warm and inviting. The restaurants are amazing. The rich culture and history is incredible. The talent is magnificent. We are looking forward to coming back again very soon!!

    • Dennis "Jack" Parker says

I have to agree with you Char that the folks I met there are wonderful and down to earth compared to other places I have traveled to in my life so far. I don’t know if this is because of their nature or they have been nurtured to react to others as you mention but I truly love the culture and hopeful it’ll spread through-out all places we live and travel to.

  2. @Char and @”Jack” – We appreciate the LOVE! Truly. Have a listen to the post “Miss Sylvia’s Voice Message for Mr. Howell” and you will get a special glimpse of how we roll. Miss Sylvia is in her 60’s, I think, and a true Southern lady. We move so – too – fast in this world; receiving her voicemail was a wakeup call to Billy and myself. Slow down, enjoy life and, especially, each other. Spreading the Love. YOU GOT IT!!! You are BOTH Delta Bohemians. And I ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie.

    Thanks for your comments!

  3. Madge, in what theater is “The Help” opening?
