Radioland: Pork Fat in Clarksdale – Need I say more?

Radioland: Pork Fat in Clarksdale

Need I say more?

There is a neighborhood grocery located on the corner of Sunflower Ave. and State Street in Clarksdale, Mississippi, which sells the hell out of “meat!” What kind of meat? Not sure! The meat is likely inspected, tasty and no doubt a great deal. Poor William does not mean to disparage its offerings, but it is pretty damn funny to see advertised MEAT BOXES FOR $99.99, PICK 5 MEAT BOX FOR $17.99, and PORK FAT for 129 CENTS per lb.

What kind of meat? Not sure! Pork fat for $1.29 per pound—seems high, but pork fat is no laughing matter down South. Most Southerners would not fare well in cultures where consumption of porcine products is prohibited. We love our BBQ and all things pork!

Poor William and Magical Madge were heading to the Shack Up Inn at Hopson last night and happened to pass by the pork fat advertisement and it seemed appropriate to engage in a non-rehearsed RADIOLAND discussion of the cost of pork fat! Enjoy, or not! pw

Watch/Listen to the RADIOLAND video!

A sweet thank you to Effie and John and Tom.

  1. Considering the many and varied uses for porkfat (Is it one word or two? I, for one, am convinced it is worthy of its own word.) $1.29 per lb seems sort of, kind of, well, reasonable to me. Then again, I generally get my porkfat for free – well, sort of – since I save it whenever I am cooking pork. And as any good cook knows, the fattier the pork the greater the flavor. I am on a plane to Chicago as I make this comment and I am hoping to engage in the consumption of pork while there. I am also looking forward to this time next month when I shall be near preparing to show up in Clarksdale for the Juke Joint Festival, where, undoubtedly, a great deal more pork products will be consumed.
