Clarksdale is blessed to have many musicians who wander purposefully into our midst, often coming back time and time again. A Delta Bohemian’s favorite is the sexy, supa suave, Carlos Elliot Jr., a jammin’ hill country blues Columbian musician who melds traditional North Mississippi Hill Country style blues with his own brand of African, Columbian hills and Caribbean beats.
Madge and I first spotted Carlos Elliot during the 2011 Tennessee Williams Festival reception at the Clark House Residential Inn. He had some serious je ne sais quoi, evidenced by all the ladies besieging him on the chaise lounge. Poor William just had to get him to mime Julio Iglesias saying, “For All the Girls I’ve Loved Before!” He definitely has the Latin flair, and had the old Bard Tom Williams been present he would have surely swooned.
Carlos has previously released two fantastic albums: “Mystic Juke-Joint Blues” and “Raise the Fire America.” His third album will be released soon, with digital pre-orders available on August 20, 2015. Another favorite hill country musician, R.L. Boyce, who plays on “Raise the Fire,” will be joining Carlos in Columbia in two weeks for a few engagements kicking off the new album, “Del Otún & el Mississippi!”
Madge and I got to know Carlos a bit as he made subsequent visits to Clarksdale, always playing at Red’s with Big Jack Johnson’s band, the Cornlickers. Sunflower Fest 2014 brought the Columbian musician back to town towing his stunning bride, Alejandra Aristizabal, who stars in the attached video clip along with Katrina the mule. Carlos came back for the 2015 Juke Joint Fest, playing several gigs around town, including Red’s Lounge and Bluesberry Café, as well as at the Foxfire Ranch near Holly Springs, MS, home of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues. Please enjoy the following clip “KATRINA THE MULE” which not only showcases this gifted musician’s talent but also captures his playful, fun-loving spirit. pw

KATRINA THE MULE
I got a mule back home, and her name’s Katrina babe
I got mule back home, and I love her so
My girl says she’s a mare but I just can’t tell
I got a mule back home, and her name’s Katrina
I got mule back home, and I love her so
When I get back home, she just starts to run! C’mon!
I got a mule back home, and her name’s Katrina
I got a mule back home, and just love her so
When I get back home, she just starts to run!
She runs ‘round like crazy, runs like a hell hound was chasing
I got a mule back home and I love her so!
But there she stares at me and I know!
I know a tail wag is a smile, C’mon y’all!
And when I get back home, She just starts to run!
And when I get back home, She just starts to run!

Vamos!
