Clarksdale, Mississippi – Caroline Kennedy will be speaking on the lawn at the Cutrer Mansion Friday, October 12th, as part of the free Community Book Talks Lecture Series. Folks will begin gathering on the grounds at 5:00 p.m. and Caroline, only surviving child of John F. Kennedy, will discuss “Listening In: The Secret White House Recordings of John F. Kennedy” starting at 5:30 p.m.

“Listening In,” a selection of secret recordings made by President Kennedy during his often-contentious presidency, provides a glimpse into a modern presidency positioned at the precipice of trying national and global times rife with conflicting world ideologies. Two 75-minute cd’s accompany the annotated transcripts of the recordings, selected by historian Ted Widner from the 265 hours of taped material.

Caroline, author and editor of nine bestselling books on American History, politics, and poetry, wrote the foreword to “Listening In.” She recalls, “Spending happy afternoons eating candy and making paper-clip necklaces under my father’s desk while men talked in serious voices…”

She concludes, “I hope that people will be drawn into the drama and the daily routine of the presidency, that they will feel they have learned something about the kind of person my father was, and most of all, I hope they will be inspired to serve our country as he did.”

Folks, to have a free, literary event in Clarksdale of this nature and caliber is “most awesome.” Y’all come!

Oxbow, a cool, local bistro, will be providing hors d’ oeuvres, and in case of rain, the event will move to the Bank Building at the corner of Yazoo and East Second Streets in downtown Clarksdale.

The Community Book Talk Lecture Series is hosted by Carnegie Public Library and the Coahoma County Higher Education Center and is funded by a grant from the Gone Giving Circle of the New Hampshire Charitable-Foundation.
