DELTA SHORTS
Delta Delusions: Hooked
By WILLIAM PRENTISS
I had never taken drugs in my life; well, I had smelled marijuana once in high school when double dating with a real creep. He was driving and I couldn’t really say anything because he carried a big-ass knife and I was in the backseat with his sister.
I hated drugs; hell, I still hate them. Still do them though. I was offered a minor role in an independent film; it was not based on my good looks, but rather on my ability to make folks laugh. I can be a bit of a ham!
The role required me to play a young man who was addicted to pain pills. I thought it should bring some authenticity to the character, so I took a few pain pills and immediately felt better. Linda had just broken up with me and I was feeling a dark shade of blue.
Well, later in the day, I took some more. These didn’t do what the others had done, so I took some more. BOOM! I was euphoric! Linda didn’t matter and I was feeling awesome. She could bite my ass!
Before long and a solid month before filming began, I was selling shit to buy mass quantities of pills from friends of friends who either had them in the medicine cabinet or who were in business getting prescriptions bought on the government dollar (that would be your dollar and my dollar) and resold for about $5 per pill.
I was authentic now, but I was way too messed up to remember my lines. I lost the part, lost my job, am living in a trailer behind the levee selling weed for a living, and still selling shit to buy the pills I need. It just happens to be other people’s shit I am selling now.
But, I do not do or cook crystal meth. I will not do meth. I draw the line on that evil drug. Well, as long as the weed and other people’s farm equipment hold out! I ain’t stupid!
