EYES OF THE LAKE HAG
Delta Bohemian readers were encouraged to write what they think happened to the fellow who once inhabited the clothes in the picture accompany this article. The winner was promised a Delta Bohemian T-shirt, a Delta Bohemian hat, and a Delta Bohemian sticker.
The winner was Delta Bohemian Josh Vaughan, who submitted the following story:
Many of you have heard the epic tale of Medusa, a once beautiful maiden in Athena’s Temple who was tragically violated by Poseidon. This violation enraged Athena so, that she turned Medusa’s beautiful flowing hair into a head of snakes, cottonmouths probably.
After the transformation, any man who looked upon Medusa would be turned to stone in an instant. Here in the Mississippi Delta there is also an old tale told by river rats and lake bums alike around Yazoo County.
It is told that a beautiful young woman enjoyed spending her long hot summers by the waters edge of Wolf Lake. Everyone knew of her and spoke of her beauty, though I cannot recall her name. As the years passed by and the summers grew in numbers so did the now not so young woman’s wrinkles.
One calm July afternoon she peered into the water from atop the Shake On the Lake bridge and was enraged by what she saw looking back at her from the calm mirror like water. It was a face wrinkled far before its time. Upon seeing this, the woman dove from the north side of the bridge, which was known to cause instant death.
Everyone searched for the woman but her body was never found to this day. Now legend has it that she is still out there and is known as the Lake Hag. From afar she looks as beautiful as she once did at 18 years of age, but a closer look reveals the truth.
If a man looks into the eyes of the Lake Hag he instantly disappears. At the same moment in time a new piece of driftwood emerges in the Mississippi River just south of Beulah to be weathered by the waters and aged by the sun until it sinks to the muddy depths below. Perhaps that very thing has happened to our fellow bohemian.
