Cleveland, Mississippi

The first time I watched one of Charlie Worsham‘s home-made, totally self-made, YouTube videos I was completely dumbfounded. He called it a “Cover Challenge.” Charlie asked his friends to propose a song and dare him, so-to-speak, to produce his version of the cover in less than 24 hours.

My virgin moment discovering this young twenty something Mississippi boy was “Next Girl: Charlie Worsham Cover Challenge,” a song by The Black Keys. It was his first of many cover challenges.

After my intro to Charlie, I couldn’t stop watching everything he had posted on his YouTube channel. What made it all the more intoxicating was knowing he grew up and spent his formative childhood and teenage years in Grenada, Mississippi, just a short distance from my hometown of Sumner. Years separated us, he’s young, I’m old-er, and our paths had never crossed.

Charlie Worsham is oozing with creativity and talent. The lyrics he writes speak of profound truths and he is only 26 years old.

I wanted to know him. I wanted to tell the world about him.

Charlie and I began an email correspondence, shared cell phone numbers and have intended to get together at his Nashville home/studio for months and months. Never happened. Life gets busy.

Charlie’s life got especially busy when he was asked by Taylor Swift to open for the Taylor Swift Concert Tour 2011. WOW.

Time passed, I kept thinking about Charlie and following his progress and all-of-a-sudden my Facebook friend, Michele Tews Fondren, who first told me about Master Worsham, wrote on my Timeline the following post last Friday, April 20, 2012.

Oh My. How quickly did I change my plans?

Charlie and three of his friends performed together for the first time ever in a practice session of sorts at the Pickled Okra in Cleveland. Billy and I sat in utter, jaw-dropping amazement at the talent displayed in front of us during their performance a week ago Friday.

I already knew how talented Charlie was but his fellow band members, all presently living in Nashville, two of which were schoolmates of his in Boston, were on an equal par with Charlie. On guitar, Quinn Loggins (son of Dave Loggins – who penned Please Come to Boston), bass player and cool cat Brad Shapiro and drummer, most new to the mix, Scott Quintana. Yes, the four of them had never performed together prior to this night.

We took many videos and photos. We couldn’t stop ourselves. The video is raw and the sound not ideal but the talent obvious. Here is one little taste for your personal enjoyment of Charlie’s Mississippi in July, a song he co-wrote with Ben Ford and Ryan Tyndell, and one he had never performed before in Mississippi.

Watching these four musicians perform was like sitting in a private living room with them. Charlie is obviously a giving musician and throws the lead to his fellow band members often. Charlie’s spirit intrigues me, almost more than his talent. Go Charlie.

We will put up more videos from our evening at the Pickled Okre on our DELTA BOHEMIAN YouTube Channel in the coming weeks. Subscribe to our channel so you won’t miss any videos we post.

We are thrilled about the news of the long-term record deal between Charlie and Warner Music Nashville and we look forward to Charlie’s creative future.
