Stand Up Paddle (SUP) 2012 Race Calendar
Featuring photograph by The Delta Bohemian
A Photo of the Year Contest was conducted by Supconnect.com. The calendar was created to give paddle boarders a tool to help them organize their schedule of events; Magical Madge submitted a photograph taken by Poor William.
The photo was taken after local paddle enthusiast Driftwood Johnnie Ruskey, owner and operator of Quapaw Canoe Company, invited The DB to accompany him and his Mighty Quapaw apprentices on their encounter with British adventurer Dave Cornthwaite, who was in the process of paddle boarding the entire length of the Mississippi River.
Ruskey and the Quapaws joined Dave and his RAF pilot brother Andy Cornthwaite for a bit of river trash pickup before the Brits headed south toward the Gulf of Mexico. Ruskey joined him days later for the final coast into the gulf.
The picture selected for November was taken from a pier jutting out near the Helena Harbor. Magical Madge, Poor William, and notable Quapaw assistant Ellis Coleman were at pier’s edge as the nine paddlers made their way from the harbor into the meandering and murky channel of the mighty Mississippi River.
While Coleman sent messages and missives to the Nine with the beating of a drum and Native American sounding incantations designed to remind the paddlers that supplication for the “river to be with them” was being made on their behalf, Poor William was stretching his lens to catch a sight not seen before on our stretch of the Father of Waters.
The paddlers from left to right are as follows: Dave Cornthwaite, John Ruskey with his precious “littlest adventurer” daughter Emma-Lou, Andy Cornthwaite, and Mighty Quapaw’s James “Woody” Sykes, Jerry “Boo” Jones, Darius “Daredevil” Jurden, Makevious “Dinky” Jones, and Jeremy “Ba-Ba” Jones.

This is absolutely awesome. Congrats Billy. Kudos to Madge for submitting the work. I love hearing about and seeing photographs from river adventures with John Ruskey. I really want to take his portrait for my personal project “Traces In These Faces”. He has a lot of stories embedded all over his face and in his eyes. Billy, you’re really fortunate, you too Madge, to be able to join such adventures. I love you guys.
Chas, Ruskey would be a fantastic subject for your “Traces In These Faces” project which I love, by the way! Fantastic beginning. PLEASE let me know when you go to shoot Ruskey. I want to cover you photographing him!
Billy, you couldn’t have “set up” a better photo. It’s really wonderful. Congrats to you both for having an eye.
