(Clarksdale, Mississippi) – There is an instrument in Clarksdale that sits silent most days until it comes alive, usually on Sunday mornings, when Jay Westfaul tickles it’s keys during church services at St. George’s Episcopal Church.
Another fine organist of note is coming to town Thursday, February 7th at 6:30 pm to sit on the same bench as Westfaul in front of the magnificent instrument at St. George’s; such instrument is known as THE ORGAN.
David Briggs is an internationally renown British organist. Presently Briggs is Artist-in-Residence at St. James Cathedral in Toronto, Canada and is the Organist Emeritus for the Gloucester Cathedral in the UK.
Read what The Organists’ Review had to say about this talented musician.
“The playing is unquestionably marvelous; shapely, virtuosic and poetic in turns…stupendous technical brilliance, musical imagination of the first order and breathless inspiration.” – The Organists’ Review, UK
There will be a reception following David’s performance and Yazoo Pass is catering.
Ok. So that all sounds good but are you wondering…
WHY is CLARKSDALE hosting an ORGAN CONCERT?!?! This is a blues town. Guitars. Harp. Drums. Bass. Washboard. Stomping Feet. Hollering. Singing. Dancing.
Briggs just happens to be willing to donate his time and talents for worthy causes and St. George’s has a fabulous organ for him to demonstrate his craft to any who will listen. What worthy cause this time? Clarksdale’s very own Griot Youth Program, a non-profit organization providing music and arts education to youth in our area.
Admission is FREE but donations – earmarked for GRIOT – are highly encouraged and much appreciated and needed.
IF you want to attend, better call 662-902-6805 or email Cali Noland at griotarts@gmail.com.
The Delta Bohemian is attending the event. We are also excited that The Griot Youth Program will soon be our next door neighbors on Sunflower!
