Clarksdale knows all about restaurants closing but lately hope has sprung forth for our dining choices. We have two new Delta restaurants to check out.
Guadalajara Restaurant recently opened in the Commerce Plaza across South State Street from Kroger. And only 19 miles down Highway 49, Sumner Grille has opened for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
How did they start? Read on.
GUADALAJARA
He struck off by himself, leaving his home of Guadalajara at the young age of 15, and moved to America. He learned the restaurant business from the inside out and at age 22 he opened his first restaurant in Cleveland, Mississippi and named it after his homeland, Guadalajara.
Hector Mata knows how to make visions and passions a reality. The visionary restauranteur has had his eye on Clarksdale for a long while. He was able to acquire the building for former Amigo Restaurant in Commerce Plaza off State Street in Clarksdale less than a year ago. He then renovated the large, cavernous space into a wonderland reminiscent of old Mexico. (Think Mexico at Epcot.)
Mata worked nine months on the tedious task of transforming an environment with little personality into an intriguing, beautiful and unique spot for quiet conversation, privacy and delicious authentic cuisine with exceptional service. Be sure to check out the architectural details of his restaurant.
Hector, his wife and two children are now the proud owners of 3 Guadalajara Restaurants in the Mississippi Delta: Cleveland, Indianola and now, thankfully, Guadalajara in Clarksdale!

SUMNER GRILLE
I grew up in Sumner, the county seat of West Tallahatchie. My daddy’s office was adjacent to the old Ford dealership on the town square next to the historical courthouse. That same dealership is now a restaurant. Who’d a thunk it? Local farmers Michael Wagner and Graham Flautt did.
Back in December 2011, the two men began dreaming about having a restaurant in their beloved town. By January 2012 they had the space. And now, after months and months of planning and building, they have created and opened a dining mecca for the most beautiful town in all of the Mississippi Delta, Sumner. It is aptly named Sumner Grille. Oh how I wish my parents were alive to witness this miracle.
They opened for dinner on Thursday, August 15 and have been serving Breakfast and Lunch prior to that for about a week. The staff is getting their feet wet and learning the ropes, so please be patient and understanding. However, in the kitchen there stands Chef Walt Norwood, gifted Executive Chef, who knows how to get a restaurant going and how to elicit satisfying moans out of his customers. Many of you may know Walt from his days with Oxford’s Waltz on the Square, Cafe Marie in Tunica and recently Yazoo Pass. Kudos to Mike and Graham for collaborating with Walt.
