Wrestling with Wisdom Comes Home: Cutrer & Juke Joint
The launch of Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads recently provided an opportunity to share the book with friends, readers, and visitors during a memorable weekend in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

The weekend began at the historic Cutrer Mansion, where Chilly Billy Howell presented many of the ideas, experiences, and stories that inspired the book. Hosted by Jen Waller Pearson, Director of the Coahoma County Higher Education Center and Cutrer Mansion, the evening brought together friends, readers, and members of the community for an exploration of wisdom, faith, place, memory, humor, and the enduring questions that shape our lives.
Following Jen’s introduction and a brief welcome from Madge Marley Howell, the program opened with Billy’s chosen theme song, Frank Sinatra’s That’s Life, setting the tone for an evening of storytelling, reflection, and conversation.
Drawing from personal experiences, stories gathered over a lifetime in the Mississippi Delta, and the observations that ultimately inspired Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads, Billy reflected on the journey behind the book rather than simply discussing its contents. Through stories, humor, memories, and reflections, he explored many of the questions that have shaped both the book and the ongoing work of Delta Bohemian.
Throughout the presentation, themes of wisdom and folly, faith and doubt, place and memory, success and failure, humor and heartbreak emerged as reminders that life itself is often a wrestling match between competing truths, choices, and values.
We were especially honored to welcome friends who traveled to Clarksdale during Juke Joint Festival weekend to attend the event. Among those present was friend Bernie Demczuk, Professor of African American History and Culture, who has joined Billy on several Delta Bohemian Tours over the years. We were also pleased to be joined by our publisher, Dr. Carolyn Warren Wiley of Rose & Pearl Publishing, along with many friends and neighbors from the local community. Tony Gravier of Yarbrough Music in Memphis provided excellent sound for the evening, helping ensure that everyone could fully enjoy the presentation.
Sadly, Billy’s mother was unable to attend due to recent health concerns. Wanting to ensure she could still enjoy the evening, our friend Coop Cooper generously documented portions of the event through video and photographs.
Two days later, the conversation moved from the halls of Cutrer Mansion to the streets of downtown Clarksdale as Delta Bohemian participated in Juke Joint Festival. Throughout the festival, visitors stopped by the Delta Bohemian tent to browse the book, share stories, ask questions, and visit about life in the Mississippi Delta.
For us, the combination of these two events beautifully reflected the spirit of Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads—part reflection, part storytelling, part conversation, and always rooted in the people, places, and experiences that continue to shape our journey.
We are grateful to everyone who attended, stopped by the tent, purchased a book, shared an encouraging word, or simply spent a few moments visiting with us. Thank you for being part of the ongoing pursuit of Wisdom.
In addition to photographs from the weekend, we are pleased to share a selection of original illustrations from Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads. Created by Madge Marley Howell, these visual reflections accompany the aphorisms and poems throughout the book and offer another perspective on many of its themes. Together, the illustrations and writings invite readers to engage the questions of wisdom, faith, place, and the human journey through both word and image.
