Clarksdale, Mississippi

Ellen Tabor Gingsberg of Dallas was in town for her sister Blanche Tabor Long’s funeral during the first week of February 2012. Ellen and Blanche’s son, Malcolm—a childhood friend of Poor William’s—and his girlfriend Emilie were staying at the Clark House Residential Inn during the time of the funeral.

The lovely, sharp-as-a-tack, almost 90-year-old prolific reader with a killer sense of humor and a winsome demeanor shared her Clarksdale “First” with the Delta Bohemian. Ellen was the first baby born in the old Clarksdale Hospital. The year? 1923!

Ellen was also a classmate of the famous portrait painter Marshall Bouldin III. Ginsberg and Bouldin share old school humility, a fine whit, a sweet spirit and graciousness reflective of old school Delta values and manners. God Bless and thank you Ellen Tabor Ginsberg for brightening my day during a difficult journey back home for you and Malcolm. Come and see us again soon! pw

  1. What a fun short read. Well, set aside the reason for this fine woman to be back home. I have always wondered, since I was a really, really small child (I’m still small but you get my drift) who was the first person to be born in this hospital. I used to have bets with my grandmother that it was a female. I WIN! Thank you, Billy for sharing this piece of Clarksdale history and reminding me of a little piece of my history. The old Clarksdale Hospital has been a big interest of mine since I was a kid and still to this day. That hospital is in my old stomping grounds. I grew up on the corner of Lynn and Herrin and this place was always a daily visit. ALWAYS. I haven’t taken pictures of the hospital since 2008ish maybe 2007. This reminds me that I need to take some updated shots. I want a full on tour of it. The top floor has always been a mystery to me. I’m starting the video now and I just want to say before it plays any further, GREAT CHOICE ON THE MUSIC. It’s cute and funny how Ellen adds, “in the OLD original Clarksdale hospital.” That is one classy lady. MOST AWESOME THING….she is alive to tell the story herself. So cool.

  2. Well it is 2021. Is this site still active? What has become of the grounds and building?
