CLARKSDALE, MISSISSIPPI (deltabohemian.com) – VIDEO INCLUDED! The Friends of the Sunflower River is seeking some support. This river flows right smack through Clarksdale. In fact, the Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Festival is named after it.

How fortunate are we, locals and lovers of Clarksdale, to have such a beautiful RIVER flowing right through our town?  Will you consider becoming a Friend of the Sunflower River? It only costs $25 a year but it goes a long way to help this foundation.

A MAJOR PROJECT they currently have is raising the newly installed weir an additional 18″. This will help beautify downtown Clarksdale and encourage more of US to go and enjoy it’s beauty. It’s right here. Beautiful place. Stop or pause the next time you cross over a Sunflower River Bridge and have a look at this waterway that we are so fortunate to have in our midst.

For only $25 you can make a difference. A Big difference. Currently the Friends of the SR are trying to raise an additional $1,500+ to fund an increase in the height of the weir which will stabilize the height of the river and make it even more beautiful for us to look at and enjoy.

Have a look at some of these pictures and watch this recent video shot by Poor William as he, Fat Clyde John McKee, Josh Kypke and Courtney Van Cleve enjoyed a March 10th day on this fabulous resource we have here right under our noses.

If you wanna do something that matters, and John Ruskey is the total spearhead here, plus Mack Crank in a BIG WAY, then send along some bucks to help this river become all it can be.

May the river be with you. mmh

HERE IS THE LATEST UPDATE VIA JOHN RUSKEY FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE SUNFLOWER RIVER.

The Sunflower River Weir needs to be raised another 18 inches — local support needed to complete project — $3,000 goal by April 1st.

FAQs:

1. Isn’t the weir project completed?  No its not done.  It is 90% complete but now it needs to be fine-tuned.

2. Why wasn’t the weir built higher?  The engineers didn’t want to cause flooding problems for downtown Clarksdale.   But now that we’ve seen  the effects of the weir we know 18 inches can be added without future detriments

3. Why donate?  This is your way of participating in the future of Clarksdale, and its a good investment: concrete, steel and rock have longevity!

Friends of the Sunflower River has agreed to spearhead a fundraiser to compliment this project which will provide life-long beauty and promote healthy living to downtown Clarksdale and all the neighborhoods along the Sunflower River including Riverton, Brickyard, Lower Brickyard, West Clarksdale, Duckwalk, Circle Drive neighborhoods, Chancellorsville, Ridgecrest, and anyone else who lives along Sunflower Avenue, Riverside Drive, Cypress Street and enjoys Soldier’s Field Park and the Sunflower River Walk.  ($20,000 budget total shared by City, County, and Yazoo Water Management District + contributions).

Send contribution by check made out to “Friends of the Sunflower River” with the earmark “Clarksdale Weir”
