Introducing Malachi Moments
Long before Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads became a book, Chilly Billy Howell had a habit of sharing spontaneous reflections about life, faith, human nature, and the questions that seem to follow us all. Over the years, many of those thoughts found their way into conversations, videos, writings, and eventually into the pages of the book itself.
Malachi Moments continues that tradition.
Each Malachi Moment begins with an aphorism selected from the chapter corresponding to the day of the month, much as many people read a chapter from Proverbs that matches the calendar date. With thirty-one chapters and more than 2,700 aphorisms, Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads lends itself naturally to this daily rhythm of reflection.
What follows is unscripted.
During their morning devotional time, Billy and Madge read the day’s aphorism and allow the conversation to unfold naturally. Sometimes the discussion is lighthearted. Sometimes it is deeply personal. Often it raises more questions than answers.
As a couple, we relish the way reading God’s Word, praying together, exploring the insights of Christian thinkers, and reflecting on the day’s aphorism from Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads often sends us down paths of conversation we never expected to travel. Along the way, we wrestle with questions of faith, wisdom, human nature, and the decisions that await us at life’s crossroads. Those moments enrich our journey together as a couple and help us think more carefully about how to live lives that are pleasing to God.
Wisdom is rarely discovered by rushing to conclusions. More often it emerges through reflection, conversation, experience, and a willingness to consider ideas from different perspectives. At its best, that process is a search not only for wisdom, but for truth—the kind of truth that helps us better understand ourselves, our neighbors, and our relationship with God.
Wisdom is rarely discovered by rushing to conclusions. More often it emerges through reflection, conversation, experience, and a willingness to consider ideas from different perspectives. Beneath that pursuit lies an even deeper desire: the search for truth. Not merely facts or opinions, but the kind of truth that helps illuminate the path before us and guides us toward lives that are pleasing to God.
The conversations frequently continue after the cameras stop rolling. Curiosity has a way of doing that. A particular aphorism may send us exploring biblical passages, historical events, philosophical ideas, or cultural traditions in search of deeper understanding. Sometimes those discoveries confirm our initial impressions. Sometimes they lead in entirely unexpected directions.
We are pleased to begin sharing new Malachi Moments once again. Our goal is to release a new episode each week through the Delta Bohemian YouTube channel while also sharing it through our Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads Facebook and Instagram pages.
The first featured Malachi Moments are drawn from Wrestling with Wisdom at the Crossroads 20:13. What began as a single reflection quickly led to a deeper conversation and ultimately unfolded into a three-part series exploring the nature of truth and our search for it.
We hope these brief reflections encourage thought, conversation, and perhaps inspire you to spend a little time wrestling with wisdom yourself.
