Spirit draggers, I can’t stand ‘em and yet I “are” one! My lovely wife Madge Marley Howell sang a powerful bluesy song during the offertory at church on Sunday. Padre Bill Gleason accompanied on guitar and Alice Hasen played violin.

Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down” by Eric Bibb speaks to the sanctified, the searcher, or just plain anybody who don’t need nobody telling him or her to be other than he or she is. I love lyrics with double negatives when they work, just like using the incorrect “being” verb can be vitally important in the transmission of Southern literature.

I first heard Madge sing Bibb’s song in 2009 at St. George’s Day School’s 50th Anniversary celebration. Madge has an infectious free spirit that I envy and sometimes attempt to squelch. Shameful!

It ain’ my job to squelch anybody, particularly when my crazy ass can’t stand when somebody gets to spirit dragging on me. So, I need to be more like Madge so that I can be more like Madge. Freedom is a beautiful thang! Madge always says that no two people are created alike! Good words to remember! pw

Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down
by Eric Bibb

You might slip, you know you might slide.
Stumble and fall by the road side.
But don’t you ever let nobody, drag your spirit down.
Remember we’re walking up to heaven, don’t let nobody turn your around.

Walk with the rich, and walk with the poor.
Learn from everyone, that’s what life is for.
Don’t ever let nobody, drag your spirit down.
We’re walking up to heaven, don’t let nobody turn your around.

Some say “Yes”, some say “No”.
Some wait and see, which way the wind is gonna blow.
Don’t ever let nobody, drag your spirit down.
We’re walking up to heaven, don’t let nobody turn your around.

I might say things, that sound strange to you.
I might preach the gospel, but I believe it’s true.
Don’t ever let nobody, drag your spirit down.
We’re walking up to heaven, don’t let nobody turn your around.

You might slip, you know you might slide.
Stumble and fall by the road side.
Don’t ever let nobody, drag your spirit down.
We’re walking up to heaven, don’t let nobody turn your around.
