Hopson Commissary: Monday Evening Comin’ Down

WATCH VIDEO

I am increasingly drawn to Hopson Commissary’s Monday evening, acoustic, “comin’-down-easy” from the weekend, musical experience beginning at 6:00pm accompanied by free food (always a pot of something owners James & Cathy Butler have whipped up) and free music (please tip the musician 😎 ) usually by gifted, self-effacing local musician/writer Marshall Drew, whose father owns Bluestown Music located at 317 Delta Ave., in downtown Clarksdale.

If Marshall is unavailable, then often his accomplished cousin Gramm Phillips may play, or local singer/songwriter Seth Stroud, member of the amazing Blackwater Trio, could be slinging some sweet, mellow, acoustic sounds one is sure to hear every Monday night at Hopson regardless of the performer.

Somebody local will be sharing music designed to help folks segue from the weekend and likely a manic Monday into the week ahead. It’s chill, righteous and a great spot to visit with others or to sit up front for an intimate, almost solo-feeling performance.

We are in the birthplace of the blues, Clarksdale, where live music can be heard every night of the year, and on Monday nights one can catch live blues at Art & Carol Crivaro’s Bluesberry Café downtown beginning around 8pm, but check out Hopson Commissary early for as unique an experience as one can find in the epicenter of American music.

Be sure and holla at Robert Birdsong, your amiable bartender with a wealth of knowledge about the Mississippi Delta, he ain’ got no shortage of anecdotal tales to keep you comin’ on back to the Delta!

Enjoy a short clip of Marshall singing “Sweet Melissa” last night at Hopson Commissary. Bartender Robert Birdsong’s birthday celebration was a blast and locals vested in the creative economy showed up and out to help a fine man recognize another year of wisdom! Cheers! —Chilly

Hopson Plantation Commissary is a spot rife with history and one of the many local places in the birthplace of the blues to go for authentic Delta music on Monday nights, Saturday nights, and often for catered parties and events.
