How Kangen Water Changed a Skeptic

Poor William, that’s me, will refer to himself in the first person in this article, as this “infomercial” is too important to use the satirical third-person ruse he often employs.

I inherited biologically and acquired environmentally a more than healthy degree of cynicism and skepticism from my father–Roundman. Though I too often pride myself (comes before a fall) on my intuition, I am constantly amazed how often I am wrong in my initial gut responses to just about anything.

When my wife, Magical Madge, and her brother, Dr. Bo Marley, first became enamored and enthralled with this thing called Kangen water, I was quick to laugh my fat ass off at what the other brother, Redbone, jokingly referred to as super water. It appeared to cure just about as many ailments as snake oil. I hooted every time it was mentioned. I “hoots” no longer.

The efficacy of this high alkaline water for me rests on two elements: empirical evidence and personal experience.


The Japanese as a nation and people group are lean, mean, alkaline drinking machines. Other than Sumo wrestlers, most Japanese are svelte, fastidious folks, who take their diet and lifestyle very seriously. One company alone, ENAGIC, has sold more than 400,000 water ionizers in Japan alone.

Ionized water increases our alkalinity and uses its negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP) to neutralize free radicals, which are harmful to the human body. Another positive aspect of ORP is low micro clustering of water molecules, which makes it easier for humans to absorb water and increase hydration.
Free radicals are atoms with an odd number of electrons. The prime danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with vital cellular components like DNA. Cells will operate poorly or die when this transpires. To prevent free radical damage our bodies have a defense system made up of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are key in the prevention of cellular damage — the foremost pathway for cancer, aging, and a host of other diseases.

Antioxidants are molecules that interface with free radicals and stop a chain reaction before molecules are damaged. Basically, free radicals are in the business of robbing others in search of what they need to survive, thereby leeching important elements from healthy cells.

One of the most enticing aspects of high-alkaline water is that cancer reportedly cannot live in an alkaline environment; cancer cells prefer an acidic environment. Most of the drinks we drink are high in acid and our typical American diet, rife with processed, non-fresh foods, is acid-based. Given our 21st Century diet and lifestyles our bodies provide the acid-based environment that cancer cells covet.


The author of “The pH Miracle”, Dr. Robert Young, said, “To maintain or restore your body’s natural pH balance for optimal health, drink restructured, ionized water which is rich in anti-oxidants and alkaline minerals. Ionized water helps reverse the effects of acid accumulation in the body, the root cause of degenerative diseases and aging.”

Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, M.D., Director of the Water Institute of Japan has written, “Increasing the alkalinity leads to decreasing the oxidation. The effects of free radicals or oxidation of the cells can be better described as hepatitis, cirrhosis and cancer in the liver; pancreatitis, diabetes and cancer in the pancreas; and nephritis, nephrosis and cancer in the kidneys. While all are bad, do you see the common denominator to all of these? Yes, it’s cancer.”

Hayashi believes that ionized water is thousands of times more healthful to the body than any other water and one glass of ionized water has the ability to hydrate the human body better than gallons of any other kind of water.

Dr. Hiromi Shinya, the co-developer of the colonoscopy, has performed more than 370,000 of these medical tests and over 140,000 polypectomies and is a strong proponent of ionized water.

Dr. Shinya puts all of his patients on a high alkaline diet with at least one gallon of ionized water every day. According to Shinya, all of the cancer patients that he and his team have treated have a zero recurrence of any kind of cancer. He emphatically states if people would follow his recommended lifestyle that there would be no cancer at all. He will not treat patients who do not commit to drinking daily the recommended amounts of high-alkaline water.


Poor William’s Experience:

As was stated earlier, Poor William believes any veritable testimony must include a “changed life.” When first drinking the super water, I noticed several things right off the bat.

The first thing I realized was I had a hard time walking, due to pain in most of the numerous bones I had broken over the years and the ligaments I had torn, which were legion. Two days after beginning a daily diet of one-plus gallons of Kangen water, I could hardly get out of bed. When I notified my wife, she immediately knew that the high-alkaline water was working on damaged stuff in my body.

The good Dr. Bo Marley encouraged the Aching One to keep drinking the water. Good stuff was beginning to happen. Within a few days, the spots of ailment actually felt better than they had in years, and nearly six months later, they are still being repaired on a daily basis.

I have combined the drinking of Kangen water with a diet high in fresh and often raw vegetables with moderate levels of consistent exercise. My goal was to lose ten pounds per month for the first 6 months. To the day after the third month of my new regimen I have achieved my goal of ten pounds per month.

While the holistic approach I have taken has produced tremendous results in this 51-year old fellow, I believe the key to be the consistent consumption of high-alkaline Kangen water. I was always dehydrated and didn’t know it.

I drink about two gallons a day of Kangen water now and when I drop down to about a gallon I start showing signs of being slightly dehydrated. I used to go a week and hardly drink a gallon of water.

When I started drinking the water one of the first signs I noticed was I was not hedonistically hungry as before. I would always eat aggressively, which I attribute to being dehydrated and the need to fill some kind of emotional void in my life, along with, of course, the Howell tradition of “liking me some groceries.”

Once hydrated, my body appeared not to crave the unhealthy things I had before. I put a powdered packet of Emergen-C vitamin supplement in a glass of water every morning. It is high in vitamin C and the B complexes, along with a host of other necessary minerals.

When drinking the mixture in the past, I would always notice my urine would be bright yellow right after consuming it. This was attributed to my body not absorbing most of the vitamins. When I mixed it with Kangen water, my urine was no longer yellow, meaning my body was absorbing vast amounts more of the important supplemental elements.

My skin looks better, my hair feels fuller, and I have drastically reduced the daily intake of my blood pressure medicine along with two others, and hope to be medication free within the year.

My joints feel more nimble than they have in years and I now have the ability to curb my aggressive eating. Is it all attributable to Kangen water? No, but I believe it was the catalyst for a changed lifestyle and still remains the glue holding together the hope of a healthy future.

Is it simply a hydration issue? No! I crave the different taste of Kangen water, so I drink more of it. Also, knowing that the water is removing harmful intruders from my body provides peace of mind. But, the greatest sense of relief, and only God knows what is in my or anybody’s future, is knowing that a high-alkaline environment reduces the chance of cancer attacking my body. This is worth the cost of a machine. This is exciting stuff. This is worth telling folks I love how much Kangen water has changed the life of this skeptic.

    I just bought a Kangen machine, so I’m not a naysayer. That being said, I have to question the statement that “Dr. Hiromi Shinya, the co-developer of the colonoscopy, has performed more than 370,000 of these medical tests” (colonoscopies).

    To do so, he would have had to perform 20 per day, 7 days per week, every week for over 55 years.

    Something wrong with that number…

    • We tend to agree. Highly unlikely he performed that many but then again, we don’t know. He may have a clinic with multiple doctors and the figures are derived from that. Who knows. Still, the findings are impressive.
